A note on the product homomorphism problem and CQ-definability

چکیده
The product homomorphism problem (PHP) takes as input a finite collection of relational structures A1, . . . ,An and another relational structure B, all over the same schema, and asks whether there is a homomorphism from the direct product A1 × · · · × An to B. This problem is clearly solvable in non-deterministic exponential time. It follows from results in [1] that the problem is NExpTimecomplete. The proof, based on a reduction from an exponential tiling problem, uses structures of bounded domain size but with relations of unbounded arity. In this note, we provide a self-contained proof of NExpTime-hardness of PHP, and we show that it holds already for directed graphs, as well as for structures of bounded arity with a bounded domain size (but without a bound on the number of relations). More precisely, we obtain:

The Complexity of Reverse Engineering Problems for Conjunctive Queries
Reverse engineering problems for conjunctive queries (CQs), such as query by example (QBE) or definability, take a set of user examples and convert them into an explanatory CQ. Despite their importance, the complexity of these problems is prohibitively high (coNEXPTIME-complete). We isolate their two main sources of complexity and propose relaxations of them that reduce the complexity while hav...
متن کاملA Note on Spectrum Preserving Additive Maps on C*-Algebras
Mathieu and Ruddy proved that if be a unital spectral isometry from a unital C*-algebra Aonto a unital type I C*-algebra B whose primitive ideal space is Hausdorff and totallydisconnected, then is Jordan isomorphism. The aim of this note is to show that if be asurjective spectrum preserving additive map, then is a Jordan isomorphism without the extraassumption totally disconnected.
متن کاملFixed-Parameter Tractability, Definability, and Model-Checking
In this article, we study parameterized complexity theory from the perspective of logic, or more specifically, descriptive complexity theory. We propose to consider parameterized model-checking problems for various fragments of first-order logic as generic parameterized problems and show how this approach can be useful in studying both fixed-parameter tractability and intractability. For exampl...
متن کاملA note on lifting projections
Suppose $pi:mathcal{A}rightarrow mathcal{B}$ is a surjective unital $ast$-homomorphism between C*-algebras $mathcal{A}$ and $mathcal{B}$, and $0leq aleq1$ with $ain mathcal{A}$. We give a sufficient condition that ensures there is a proection $pin mathcal{A}$ such that $pi left( pright) =pi left( aright) $. An easy consequence is a result of [L. G. Brown and G. k. Pedersen, C*-algebras of real...
متن کاملDynamic Multi Period Production Planning Problem with Semi Markovian Variable Cost (TECHNICAL NOTE)
This paper develops a method for solving the single product multi-period production-planning problem, in which the production and the inventory costs of each period arc concave and backlogging is not permitted. It is also assumed that the unit variable cost of the production evolves according to a continuous time Markov process. We prove that this production-planning problem can be Stated as a ...
